Common Toad found while doing heavy garden work taking out dog rose bushes in late autumn. I missed striking it by 1cm. It was huddled in couch-grass which was tangled in with the rose bush. As I thought it had bedded for the winter, I placed it on the compost where it would have shelter and insects and a way to make it's own escape if it wanted. I covered it in straw. I checked it in December and it hadn't moved but was alive - motionless. So I left it the winter, As spring broke, I checked again and it had moved. I checked a few more times but figured it had moved on. 11th June 2014 I decided to turn the compost heap and after a couple of spade fulls I noticed it had made another nest/shelter in the compost. I have a photo of this too (not so good). Finding it still there put paid to my work on the compost, but I returned the next day and got the attached photo. Not sure where it is now, but the compost was obviously ok for it over the winter and it shows why we need to be careful with things like pampas grass and long leave debris when we are clearing it in late autumn to spring time. Many set fire to pampas but this kills a lot of little creatures.

I have noticed that common toads tend to like wintering in sheds (brick where there is a gap under the door).
