Phylloblastia fortuita

Observation - Phylloblastia fortuita. Description: Discovered yesterday while pruning an overgrown bay (Laurus nobilis) tree. Before looking inside it, I wondered if this might be Phylloblastia inexpectata but it turns out to be P. fortuita, described as a new species in 2009.

Discovered yesterday while pruning an overgrown bay (Laurus nobilis) tree. Before looking inside it, I wondered if this might be Phylloblastia inexpectata but it turns out to be P. fortuita, described as a new species in 2009. Both are probably more common than records suggest, and the perithecia with depressed tops are worth looking for on long-lived evergreen leaves.
More info here and here.

The black stuff scattered over the thallus is 'gunk' of unknown origin, not part of the lichen.
