Escaping (more than one) from a neglected plantation of female trees. Apparently, S. pentandra would not be able to escape without seeds. The female version of Salix x meyeriana closely resembles female Salix pentandra and often is mistaken for it. For those interested, see http://www.salicicola.com/notes/salix_x_meyeriana/meyeriana_winchester.html , http://www.salicicola.com/notes/salix_x_meyeriana/forgotten_willow.html and Flora nordica, I quote "The Nordic material consists mainly of male plants...The deviating female clone has leaves and catkins generally resembling those of S. pentandra, but it differs in having twigs which are more easily broken at the junction, longer petioles, peduncle leaves entire or only partly serrate, and bracts ciliate all along the margin ...This clone has often been confused with S. pentandra or S. lucida".
