We can all do our bit for biodiversity: and June 21 – 27 places the spotlight on insects. Insect Week encourages us to celebrate insects and the important role they play; discovering more about these small and wonderful creatures in our gardens, parks, and green spaces. Anyone can get involved, from home or outdoors; and iSpot can help you record, identify and learn more about these #LittleThingsThatRunTheWorld!
On iSpot start by exploring the thousands of observations of insects here. Click explore sub-group to discover more about what interests you! For those new to iSpot click on sign up and register to join the community, take photos, post what you see or help other identify what they find. This will also help us get to over 80,000th registered users as we celebrate iSpot12for12 with 12 months of activity. June 27 marks 12 years since the public launch of iSpot as a citizen science platform engaging nature observers, both experts and novices, to identify and learn about biodiversity.
Insect Week is an annual campaign organised by the Royal Entomological Society to encourage people of all ages to learn more about insects It promotes awareness of insects and their importance around the world each year and is supported by thousands of people and partner organisations, including iSpotnature.org. The week was launched by Professor Helen Roy MBE, president of the Royal Entomological Society, who encourages people of all ages “to become an entomologist and discover something new about the little things that run the world.” Watch the recording here.

The Insect Week Photography Competition is also open for entries. Up to three images per photographer can be submitted in the categories over 1t years and under 18. There will be a 1st and a 2nd prize winner, and runners-up in each category (Specially Commended, Highly Commended or Commended). The competition has attracted thousands of stunning entries in previous years and is open to entries from amateur photographers anywhere in the world from 21st June until 31st October 2021.
