The Southern Africa species dictionary is provided by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), iSpot's partner in southern Africa.

SANBI is responsible for exploring, revealing, celebrating and championing biodiversity for the benefit and enjoyment of all South Africans. SANBI leads and coordinates research, and monitors and reports on the state of biodiversity in South Africa. The institute provides knowledge and information, gives planning and policy advice and pilots best-practice management models in partnership with stakeholders. SANBI engages in ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation, leads the human capital development strategy of the sector and manages the National Botanical and Zoological Gardens as 'windows' to South Africa's biodiversity for enjoyment and education.

On iSpot, the Southern African species dictionary provides the names that are offered when you add an identification to an observation that is located within Southern Africa. Data from the dictionary also drive the taxon hierarchy that allows you to browse between species, genera, and higher taxa (such as families and orders), as well as access to common names. For iSpot in southern Africa we do not recommend certain names over others, but rather encourage users to document names in current use.
