Sorry the pictures are so bad, but it was difficult to photograph. Initially I thought it was a bumblebee, except it did not have the correct patterning of any of the common bumblebees and the wings are not dark enough to be a cuckoo. Most noticeable was a very white furry abdomen and a general compact shape to the insect. Having previously seen the red-tailed mimic of Volucella bombylans this looked very similar and hence my ID of the white-tailed morph.
