Description:

Euphorbia ernestii was relegated to synonymy under E. flanaganii by Peter Bruyns (2012) but unfortunately he hasn't given any arguments for his decision yet. However, according to SANBI's Red List of South African plants (http://redlist.sanbi.org/species.php?species=574-126) E. flanaganii (incl. E. ernestii) can be found in Albany Thicket, Indian Ocean Coastal Belt, and Savanna habitat types. The species shown here occurs in the Nama-Karoo biome.

Description:

This series of photos was taken over approximately a one month period, and after flowering, documents the ripening of the fruit of the "Lekkerbreek" tree, (Ochna pulchra). The seeds turn from a bright green to a pale grey, and finally to a black seed. The fruit vaguely resembles a comical face with a floral hat, hair, eyes, big ears and seems to be "sticking out" its tongue. The tree is rooted in the cracks of the rocks (no soil at all)at the base of the Magaliesberg mountain range.
