deciduous tree 5-15m high, branchlets slender, hanging vertically, almost to the ground. leaves: bright green above, pale or grey beneath, spring leaves silky, summer leaves glabrous, up to 160mm x 15mm, finely toothed, ending in along, tapering point( whip-tip). flowers: greenish, 1mm long, almost without exception female only sessile, in catkins20mm long, august- october. fruits greenish,sessile capsules in catkins, shedding sterile white hairs; reproduces from detached branches. cultivated for: shade, ornament, fodder, erosion control; honey source. invades: watercourses. origin: asia.
