Description:

Leopard snared and killed by poachers with dogs. Skin removed for sale. Paws removed for muthi.

Heartbreaking but this is reality. Chronic poverty in the area and rapid human expansion. The Soutpansberg has experienced a 66% decline in leopards since 2008. Before that it boasted one of the highest leopard densities outside of a national park.

Disturbed area and scat found on hiking trail high up above Algeria campsite. This is a cape leopard protected area but I saw no tracks. This was the only scat that wasn't obviously baboon. I thought it might be too high up for porcupine, so wondered if it might be leopard.
