Description:

In this recently burnt veld, about 3-4 years old, this species was clearly taking advantage. A damn straight opportunist of early successional stages...this kind of stuff interests me! (Just look at how small the L. rubrum plants are around this Aulax). The Aulax even already produced cones at this young age! This clearly illustrates the dynamics between resprouter and seeding species after fire. :)

Description:

Technically Featherbushes should be "Feathers and Baskets" - its the male that have the feathery flowerheads. The females have a complicated structure resembling a basket.
In the Needleleaf Featherbush, the structure of the basket is still apparent - in the other species the flowerhead is a spike surrounded by incurved woody structures that form a hollow rounded sphere with the seeds in the centre.
But here we can see that the basket is formed by the equivalent of the male "feathers".
