Spiky Orb Web Spider

Description:

Average sized orb-web spider (body length approx. 1-1.5cm) with an elaborately shaped abdomen fringed with thick 'spikes'. Its web was spread all throughout the aloe, mostly a messy tangle of silken threads, but in the centre there was a horizontal orb web suspended from the shapeless frame work. I had to drop a beetle into the web to entice the spider out from wherever it was hiding, but it was out in a flash once the beetle started wriggling.

Description:

I'm dying to know what makes these nests. This one had used around 20 leaves in its construction and you can see how the leaves have been stripped from the branch it was attached to. The leaves are stuck together with silk and inside are masses of brown balls (eggs?).

Description:

The second such pair I've seen (only about twenty meters away from where I saw the first, in fact). What I can only assume is a male and female of the same species, hiding amongst the leaves of a young protea (as were the first pair I saw). The male (body length approx. 1-1.5cm) is a light grey with a prominent brown band down his abdomen. The female fled before I could get a proper photo of her, but she was at most 0.5cm longer than the male and a uniform rust brown in colour with no apparent patterns on her abdomen or cephalothorax.
