Description:

A caulescent geophyte approximately 15cm tall. Only tight buds were evident, the petals seemed to be lighter pink with a darker edge and visible veins. Small, opposite bracts at an articulation. The peduncle changed from green to pink at the bracts. The leaves are terminally clustered, narrow and folded with hairs on the underside. The peduncle is also hairy. There is a small bract on the stem, and one of the stems was divided.

!!!

The dissected flower looks like it is infected with anther smut - a plant sexually transmitted disease that sterilises the anthers and grows fungal spores in place of pollen. If so, this is a first record for O. pendulifolia.

Can you confirm - the "pollen" was green, not yellow?

Yes, it was green. Sorry the photo wasn't clearer, I thought it looked messier that it should have. The area is fairly close and easily accessible so I could collect another plant/flower.

Please do!

If you have any chance, please do so - you can then make an interaction with the anther smut (most likely Thecaphora capensis). Would be great to have this on iSpot!
