Description:

So very similar to Vernonia hirsuta var. obtusifolia, now classified as Hilliardiella hirsuta, that it is hard for me to understand why this species is now in a different genus. Distinguished because V. flanaganii has short stalks on leaves and not clasping, while the bracts narrow gently to a tip. Both species seen at Cavern but no detail of the dampness of the sites was recorded or prominent.

Permission to use your images of Hilliardiella flanaganii

23 December 2014

Dear Peter Warren,

Drs. Vicki Funk and Harold Robinson, Curators, Dept. of Botany are working on a treatment of the tribe Vernonieae for Southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, South Africa). The monograph will be published in the Smithsonian Contributions to Botany. This is an academic publication that will be available in hard copy (distributed at no charge) and online (open access). They would like to add color photographs in the manuscript and found some images on your website. They would like to use some of these images and ask for your permission to include one or more of these photographs in their publication.

According to the iSpot website you have one or more images of the following species:
• Hilliardiella flanaganii

If permission is granted, can you send us high resolution of the images. We can give you a drop box address if that will help. In the captions for each photograph how do you want the image sited (ie: Photo by, or Photo courtesy of ).

Do you know if the plant in the photograph has been vouchered and where that voucher is deposited?

We want to thank you in advance for all your assistance.

Sincerely,
Carol L. Kelloff, Ph.D.
