Hi Andy, Light Emerald has

Hi Andy,

Light Emerald has the frilly undercarriage but I think I noticed this feature on at least one other species in ukleps. I cant remember which one at the moment and a look through a lot of the geometers in ukleps has been in vain.

Shape wise it doesnt look that far away from the 16mm Light Emerald in ukleps but your one is more colourful and much better marked. It might be it but I'm not fully convinced. The heads differ in their markings, ie the ones in the website are different from your one.

The time would be ok for a juvenile LE larva, larval stage given as August to May in ukleps.

Many thanks

Hi Cathal,

Many thanks for the info - I'll try to investigate further. In the meantime I'll continue to look for the specimen which disappeared from the microscope stage whilst I answered the phone.....perhaps it's subspecies Houdinii?

Hi Andy,
Its almost as if they know the coast is clear for an escape. They dont flinch during all the time youre looking at them but you turn your back for a moment and theyre gone.

As I said, I was sure I saw that frilly belly feature on another larva in ukleps but I couldnt find it yesterday- I only looked at some geometrids, I think its in that family.

FOUND IT!

Hanging off the back of my computer (unfortunately dead).

I think it may be the Beautiful Hook-tip which is certainly present at this site as I have previously caught adults here. What do you think?

Well done for finding that ID

Well done for finding that ID Andy and the larva. Its weird that it died so fast? Theyre usually fairly resilient critters.

No doubt thats the right ID going by the pics in ukleps, perfect match. I knew I'd seen those frills on something other than Light Emerald, nice one.
