This family generally requires dissection to be certain of ID and is not really doable from photos - very few people actually have the nerve to tackle them!
However, I'm giving it a go anyway. My impression is that this is one of those groups where no-one has really tried that hard to work out IDs from patterning, even though specialists often do give at least a probable ID from good photos quite often. I'm hoping that by doing the dissections to calibrate images, patterns will start to emerge, and it may be possible to get somewhere - at least for certain species.
It seems to be working to some extent so far, although I started it a bit late in the summer, and most species have now gone again. Some groups I'm sure will forever remain dissection jobs, but others I'm a lot more optimistic about. A good stock of images on iSpot is a way to start...
I'm making sure to point out that these IDs from photos are never, at least at this stage, definite. ;o)
