flat green fleshy pad found under a plant on a flowerpot about 1cm diameter. Is it a fern prothallus or a liver wort?

A symptom of damp conditions and undisturbed soil.

I've been suffering from excessive Marchantia for the last couple of years - I have a lot of palnts in pots - so I would suggest removing them before they produce the miniature palm-trees of their fruiting phase. Just lift the whole plate off and discard it (but not on the compost bin).

If you keep the soil regularly "fluffed up" it will discourage them from re-growing.

But I have to admit, the mini palm-trees are quite fascinating!
