Fish and Fish (which is a book on The Seashore)

tell us that this is a protandrous hermaphrodite; in a chain of individuals the smaller, younger animals at the top of the chain are male and the larger, older one at the base are female.
Eggs are laid, then a pelagic stage before some of the young shelled animals migrate and take up a position on an existing chain as males. Others not locating on a chain settle on stones and become female.
