Added: 27th October 2013 Description:
A smaller than usual Spruce Carpet is posted here with a 13mm forewing and much clearer markings.
Ive included its picture for comparison above, last pic. This observation relates to the worn one in the first 2 pics.
Confidence: I'm as sure as I can be. Notes: With a forewing size of 11-12mm this is probably the smallest Thera species Ive seen this year. Unfortunately it is worn so a definitive ID might be difficult. Both Spruce and Grey Pine Carpets have been recorded at the site inc. 2 other Spruce Carpets of the usual size on the same date. Chestnut-coloured Carpet is given a forewing size of 11-14mm in Waring, the other 2 larger species are given the same wing size of 13-17mm. Markings here could possibly be ok for Chestnut-coloured Carpet, the size certainly is good but it may be a small specimen of one of the others. I did record one other small Spruce Carpet there recently but not just as small as this- it had a forewing of 13mm. If it isnt a Chestnut-coloured Carpet, the markings would possibly appear to be more like Grey Pine than Spruce, the broader pale area immediately inside the dark central crossband seems to be more consistent with Grey Pine. Any suggestions much appreciated on this.
