For some reason I don't get many chaffinches on my feeders. Don't know why.
No interactions present.
I haven’t until last winter. My records show none in 2010, one in 2011 and two in 2012 (but note one of those was in the last but one week) then all of a sudden I had a flock of six settle in from week one of this year and they stayed until week 14. Then none since, rather hope they come back this winter.
Nice healthy looking male with a pretty female in tow. Best start stocking the feeders up regularly again (despite the grey squirrel).
Feeders regularly stocked! The squirrels go for the peanuts, mostly; the sunflower hearts are really popular with everyone else. Nijer seed only the goldfinches. I've just put up a window feeder with mealworms, but no interest yet.
My grey starts on the peanuts, moves on to the fat balls when the nuts are finished and once they are done starts on the sunflower hearts. Recently it has even started on the nijer, it has enlarged the holes. I have a very poor photo of it at work on the nijer feeder which I keep meaning to post.
At end 2012 and transition to 2013, I had 3 pairs of Chaffinches visiting the garden several times a day, but since the early spring nothing. Thought I spotted a female about a week ago and a male this weekend, so perhaps they are beginning to return from their "summer holidays".
I assume this is just part of birds' "migratory" food-seeking behaviour, because "my" Coal Tit, Long-tailed Tits, Bullfinches, Reed Buntings and Goldfinches all do the same thing.
A female turned up yesterday pm, I think it had the Fringilla papillomavirus, but I haven't looked at my photos yet. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so :-(.
