Massive Amanita

Observed: 21st October 2013 By: Michael S

This massive fungus measured 25cm across and 15-20cm high. It was growing in the gravel of driveway of a fairly modern house, under a birch, a horse chestnut, and a cherry. It has a volval sac, as just visible in the last photo. It is almost certainly an Amanita. The closest match appears to be A. Strobiloformis, but this doesn't seem likely in this area.

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
