Might it be a 'Cuckoo' wasp?
Looks like a male ant!

Many thanks both, looks like this is not an easy one! I looked at cuckoo wasps and ants but can't find any that look quite right for this one.
Nearly all the cuckoo wasps have bright colours but I can see no sign of colour on this. and it looks too thin for most species too. I also looked at ants - not a great picture as you can't see the jaws, but the shape looks good otherwise. I can't find any with paler legs though, and the first antennae segment is too short for all the ones I looked at.
I think this may remain a mystery, but thank you both very much for your help.
