Deliberate no more :o)

You're right, of course. It clearly *is* a parent bug, but if I were forced to say what exactly makes it that, I think I'd struggle. It's the shape as much as anything else that's recognisable - different proportions from the others. It's also worth noting that birch shieldbugs never (in my experience) get this dark, whereas parent bugs frequently do.
