Starlings have an orangey red patch on forehead between bill and top of head, not sure if this is proper colouring or nectar marks so don't know if it is the common Starling or a sub species can anyone help???

It's pollen

If you look closely at the flower heads in your picture (which I think are Phormium species), you can see the same colour in them, which is the pollen. Sadly, not a new subspecies....
