Description:

Is there a relatively inexpensive field guide to UK Diptera? I have the Ball and Morris guide to hoverflies but for the rest of the order I'm stuck - even for run of the mill species.

Hi Jonathon
Put your query re a book on the forum and you should get lots of helpful advice.

Actually, probably not....

By all means put your request on the forum, but I fear the answer will be no, there's no good, comprehensive field guide to UK flies. For one thing, it's a massive subject, and the usual guides are very cursory at best. There are two internet sources that I use - naturespot.org.uk has a good gallery of commoner flies. Then diptera.info has a gallery of many more, however beware - it's not complete and not just UK. The best advice is to start with some of the easier families - blowflies for example - and go from there. Some very good experts on here do help, but in the end I have learnt from experience that family or genus is often as far as you can get without scalpel and microscope. Still great fun though....
