Mange

I see why I missed it now, you put it under invertebrates because of the parasitic mite which carries the bacteria that causes the skin infection.

I don't know which mite it is in foxes; in dogs it's Demodex canis; anyone know if it is the same in foxes?

You could post this observation under mammals (for the fox) and do a species interaction link to this post. That way if someone is able to identify the species of parasite, and/or bacteria, the link will be updated and the people who follow the mammals section will see the answer as the links are automatically updated when something changes in either observation.
