There were several (counted six)of these in puddles on an old railway track going over moorland. They were approx 4" long. They were a dark brown terminating in black for the last mm or so at each end. They seemed to be quite active considering a temperature of 10 C. Altitude was 385 metres.

    Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

I think your id is correct if you move the observation to "invertebrates" you may get more response.

If you add Nematomorpha to give a scientific name.

It might be Gordius but I don't know enough about them to be sure
