Other observations

I’m logged on with Global community selected; the ‘Other observations’ seem not to be working fully, with either none or only one or two observations linked to.

Where there are linked observations these appear to be only recently created that is post upgrade. It seems then we have lost the historical links.

I have not tried joining the UK+Ireland only community to see what is happening.

links

Ray, if you find any further examples where the other observations aren't showing properly could you pass on the link so we can investigate - thanks.

Ask and ...

Ok here is one: www.ispotnature.org/node/374011?nav=og_unread, an Oystercatcher so should be dozens on the ‘Other obs...’ carousel but simply says “No observations present for this filter.” and certainly no images to link to.

May be to do with the species dictionary...

Here's what I think is happening....When you're in the Global group you're using the global species dictionary (Catalogue of Life) and so other observations presented will be based on that dictionary (i.e. it wont bring up ones created with the UK dictionary) so this feature will work when other people have used the global dictionary to classify other observations of this type.

I suspect you are right.

But should it work this way? Let’s suppose I see what I suspect is a Peruvian Diving-Petrel at the London Wetland Centre and I’m logged on as UK&Ireland I would want to see all the other Peruvian Diving-Petrel observations on the carousel if only to confirm my sighting, most of which are going to be from people logged on in Chile.

Also the whole point of being Global is so that I can see everything. It defeats the object if the person in Chile (or S. Africa later) has to submit their observation under Global too before I can see it. I am electing to be in the Global community because I wish to see every observation submitted everywhere in one place.

Baffling

While working in UK + Ireland community, I found a baffling case in the carpenter bees; there's about 28 on Ispot [given by http://www.ispotnature.org/search/node/Xylocopa ] & those that show 'other observations' (there are 17), all show just the one, http://www.ispotnature.org/node/255117 ; yet this is definitely not a xylocopa & has a totally different 'likely ID'. (see eg http://www.ispotnature.org/node/363978 & http://www.ispotnature.org/node/61935.

Xylocopa

Hi Chris, I agree that is baffling, although the fact that most of the Xylocopa observations are non-UK ones mayu have something to do with it. Will add it to the list to be looked into. Thanks for reporting it.
