Bread

Hi

I've been throwing out my stale bread for the birds. Have I been doing them harm?

Bread

Chris

Thanks. That article was really useful and re-assuring.

I'm feeding about a couple of slices every three or four days to a very busy bird table. It's doing more good than harm.

Thanks again.

Bread

I've always warned against the use of bread, especially since as a teenager in Manchester I helped the RSPCA rescue 20 or so mallard, all showing signs of malnutrition from the pond in Alexandra park - we found the bodies of dead birds as well, pathetically thin. The RSPCA man said it was because there food consisted almost exclusively of white bread which expanded in their stomachs making them think they were full when they had eaten very little. He wanted to see the feeding of bread to birds baned. The RSPCA had a big campaign shortly after, coincidence, and here we are 30-40 years later still discussing this.

Sorry to be harsh but I think there are so many better food stuffs these days to feed to birds there is no excuse for feeding bread to birds, especially waterfowl. Buy a bag of wheat grain and give them that. When I was a field teacher for the RSPB we used to buy sacks of grain and give bags of grain free to visiting school children and anyone feeding the birds with bread on the reserve.

Bread

Hi Graham

I'm not just feeding homemade brown bread. I'm topping up with table mix, feeder mix, nyger seed, peanuts and fat balls daily.

There's so much food available my visitors are getting fat. I'm thinking of passing some of the sparrows off as turkeys this Christmas. Once plucked, you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference.

Seriously, I will take your advice and stop feeding bread. I'm always glad to be able to correct my mistakes.

Thanks

Bill

Bread

Apparently wholemeal bread is not as bad as white, the story above happened, well lets say 10s of years ago, when white was just about all you could get. White is all wind and puff with no substance.

A bit of wholemeal with other food stuffs shouldn't do much harm on a bird table, the problem happens when bread is the main food; as can be the case with ducks in city parks.
