Thanks ophrys ,it looked a bit different from the usual Syrphus species I see in my garden .Do you think the reddish line along the abdomen is a vein showing or just another marking ?
Apologies, but colourblindness stops me seeing red like that...perhaps someone else can help you!
One reason it might look different is that late and early in the year they often look rather dark, and this one does have very narrow yellow bars.

Could the red colour be due to it being a recently emerged Hoverfly, its wings look to be pristine on the back edge, they tend to become worn with use, which might indicate a new adult!
