Looks like Elm to me...

... what with the asymmetrical base to the leaves, which are held alternately.

Spindle (Euonymous) have leaves held in opposite pairs, and are much more slender than this stout fellow.

I'm sure I've seen this somewhere before, with those distinctive big brown buds, but I can't remember where.. will keep looking!
