Unknown dragonfly

Observed: 18th July 2012 By: annpreseli

This dragonfly was photographed very soon after it emerged from our small garden pond - the nymph case can just be seen. it stayed in this position for around 30-40 minutes before it flew away.

ID comment

The wide antehumeral stripes on top of the thorax and the fused spots (effectively bars) on abdominal segments 9 and 10 are diagnostic.

Southern Hawkers

Southern Hawkers are regular visitors to gardens ponds and they can be very inquisitive of onlookers. You would be surprised at how many can emerge from a relatively small pond, often dozens in a single season.
