Growing in vicinity of oak. Smaller sliced specimen 10cm tall. Cap 9cm diameter. Looks a bit like picture in Roger Phillips book.

The stem on picture three has a slight yellow stain towards the base of the cut through stem.Can you remember if there was an unpleasant smell.
No - I did sniff it. There was no unpleasant smell, just an earthy mushroom smell.
I shouldn't have been so certain (never should where fungi are concerned). Dapperling (see the earlier post of a white dapperling) might be a better fit, especially with that boxy shape.
