And soil type would help, I think Fenwickfield is right about genus.

They were underneath an oak

They were underneath an oak and the bases were lightly joined. No idea about soil; it was the traditional dark brown variety rather than the chalky white stuff on The South Downs!

I've bisected one to show the internal colouration. Rubbery skin on the stalk and soft inside. They smell quite nice but difficult to place.
