Looks like the chrysalis of a Small Tourtoiseshell butterfly.
Certainly were plenty of those about.
Is Large Tort. to be expected in the area at all Philip? Just asking as I was looking ot the pupa of LT in ukleps yesterday and this isnt unlike it.
David I know I have already agreed Small Tort but just querying due to personal uncertainty having recently looked at Large Tort pupa in ukleps.
I suppose its logical but I didn't know!
Check it out on ukleps Philip, see what you think. Not sure of its distribution to be honest?
It does look more like the Large Tortoiseshell pupa on Ukleps. Interestingly, I do recall on the day I went to take a picture of what I thought was a Painted Lady butterfly but gave up when I realised it was a Tortoiseshell. Now I wonder!
(Ps I read somewhere that there are no recorded sightings of Large Tortoiseshell from Ireland. That means little though -I'm sure we both have recorded invertebrates that have no Irish records in the NBN database!)
It does seem to look like it Philip but as far as I know not all Small Tort pupa are just as gold as those in ukleps- they are extremely metallic. To my knowledge I have not seen an adult Large Tort. and I dont know if they are to be expected here or not?
