hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus
Description:

This one has been visiting our garden and coming into the house for a few years. It likes to finish off the food our cats leave, but I'd rather it ate from the garden! It is about 25cm long, maybe a bit more...

Hedgehog

Are you sure it is the same animal and not its young? I only ask as the average lifespan for hedgehogs is only 3 years. However, they can live up to 10 years in the wild. If it is the same animal your cat food has probably helped to extend its life. It may cost you money in cat food but it is helping the hedgehogs.

Same one?

To be honest, it could be its young. Last year we had 2 an adult and a youngster, this year just one. Any ideas apart from tagging how to tell from year to year?

Identifying hedgehogs

Unless they have some sort of unique markings there is no way of telling them apart. You could always catch it and paint the tip of one or two spines a dull colour, something which would identify the animal but not affect its ability to hide from predators.
