What is this appendage?

Observed: 22nd September 2013 By: Phil TrationPhil Tration’s reputation in Invertebrates
Garden Spider: Araneus diadematus
Description:

I have noticed this phallic-like appendage on several specimens of this species when I look at my photos but I cannot find any reference to it. I thought the male transferred a packet of sperm to the female's epigynum with his palps.

The epigyne of Araneus

The epigyne of Araneus species has a long tongue-like appendage or scape and this is what your image shows. The form of the epigyne is an important diagnostic feature in the identification of spiders.
