It's worth reading up on the relationship between nomadic Lapplanders, their reindeer, and this fungus: if only to realise how lucky we are to live in a lifestyle and climate that facilitates brewing alcohol!

Also there may be a connection to the English word "beserk".
The Berserkers where Norse warriors who worked themselves up into a frenzy before battle. Possibly under the influence of Amanita muscaria!
