this is the warm-up pair. Though as mentioned, I've only four to choose from, and don't know why I've never come across C. flavipes, Myopa, Physocephala, Thecophora. I suspect it must be because they prefer wetter habitats

Myopa are early flies...mostly gone by mid May. Thecophora are just very rare. Physocephala rufipes and Conops flavipes are usually there around Creeping Thistle and Common Knapweed, if you spend time looking in August (I am surprised you have not found flavipes, at least).
I start looking for Myopa in late February, as soon as the first Sallows come out. You'll enjoy the challenge of them when you find them!
