I think there are some threads on the forum about field guides. I use quite a few, but my favourite is Wild Flowers of Britain and Ireland by Blamey, Fitter and Fitter. A new edition has just been published. I also like Harrap's Wild Flowers by Simon Harrap, if you prefer photographs. Other books will become essential as you become more experienced, however - you can't have too many!

although growing wild amongst grasses on the bank of the Chelmer and Blackwater canal, I think this may be a cultivated variety of deadnettle? It was fairly close to some old houseboats.
