Some friends of mine, who live in Hayes, Middlesex (between Ealing and Uxbridge) have sent me these pictures of some of the large number of spiders that have taken up residence on the outsides of all their outside windows. They described them as having constructed little cocoons which they were then sitting in the mouth of. From the description (before I saw the photos) I wondered if it might be something to do with egg-laying, but there seem to be actual webs attached so now we are wondering if it is a sort of shelter that the spiders build while waiting for prey. Does anyone know what species they are, why they might have chosen the windows of my friends' house (on 3 different outside walls) and whether or not they are likely to cause any problems or should they just leave them.
