Hi, not sure if this will end up in the right forum, but can someone point me in the right direction on how to pronounce the latin fungi names?
Would a book or web page be available.
I have same problem! So also would be interested!!
The more I know the more I realise I don't know
Since Latin is effectively a "dead" language, there is even more room for argument over how it was pronounced than how modern languages should be.
However, sites like
offer some basic rules, though my wife (who has some knowledge of it) says that when it was a living tongue it would have had many regional variations. This would probably have been especially so when the Roman Empire was at its height, when it would likely have been mixed with local languages to produce what we'd call "hybrids".
My attempts of Anglised latin are difficult for Polish friends to understand! With the Catholic Church Latin has not completely died but I have no experience of English or Polish Church Latin!
There is a book on how to pronounce Latin names for plants,as I used to have on many years a go when at horticultural collage and it was excellent even though I still struggle to spell them.I will have a look at the Summerfield books website and report back with any news asap.
I have found a website Audio English Pronunciation WWW.DictionaryBoss.com
Pronunciation of biological Latin including scientific names of plants and animals which includes fungi.I will keep searching for a book but this look's rather good.
I will have a look at this, even if if does not have all the names, it will be a great help in understanding how they are pronounced, A great find :)
The site referred to is said to allow some nasty Malware to be installed, as well as the helpful and innocuous content.
Make sure you run virus and adware scans if you install it. It is said to be difficult to eradicate.
Thanks warning - I use free Avast anti virus and don't know if this will keep me safe!
By the way speed of iSpot site is still abysmal and no comments from iSpot team.
I'm not posting new observations or confirming/adding comments until things improve.
But it may also be keystroke capture. No experience, just what's on the web. That's not always reliable.
iSot seems to be very mercurial at the moment - one moment quick as you like, the next unusable.
Thanks one and all for the posts, I am no wiz with computers so will give this a miss just incase I get something wrong and jigger things up.
Thanks for the warning will try and see what else I can find I will contact the association for British fungi of which I am a member and see if they have or can recommend anything.I too am finding the slowness of ispot very irritating and have also decided to keep my posts till it improves do you think the iSpot team have been kidnapped and that's why there is no response or they don't know what to tell us.
Maybe they forgot to put a shilling in the meter (oops showing my age!)
But seriously not sure about the funding for this site. Only thing I can find is the OU had a Lottery Grant 2007 to November 2012. Maybe funding has now run out? Hope not because I'm learning alot from site.
At last some feedback on abysmal speed:
This morning certainly seemed alot better but I will wait and see before adding Observations/confirmations and comments!
they have go funding from another source so it should be secure for now. Of course like all such things there is a risk but I understand the OU is committed to the project so even if they lose funding from elsewhere I suspect the website itself will stay live even if other iSpot related projects fall away.
That's good news as it would be a shame to lose the site as I think lot's of us learn quite a bit from the site
Ispot seems to be working ok, although I am getting no updates on the fungi page, is anybody having the same sort of problems? It might be just my tablet and laptop having the issue and not everyone else? Here's hoping its me and not everyone else! Many thanks for any tips to remedy this problem.
It looks like there are some major problems with the site.
I'm not posting new content at the moment as I'm not sure if it will disappear!
Very few new Observations are appearing on all Groups.
Hopefully iSpot's technical team will sort this out in due course.
Looks like they are gradually repairing things. Most functionality now seems to be back - although mandatory previewing of comments remains active.
