Description:

Chipping concrete from a farmhouse wall in Lanarkshire, I dislodged a flake od the old sandstone. It showed two finger-like ridged lines. I propped the stone up under a lamp to highlight this feature.

It certainly looks like a fossil. It's worth posting the photo (with a better indication of scale) on the Natural History Museum website here: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/natureplus/community/identification/fossils-rocks

I've asked fossil expert Alan Holiday who says:

"Not seen anything like it. Given its location in the Central Valley of Scotland it is likely to be Carboniferous in age - it could be some poorly preserved fossil wood material. There is nothing similar in Palaeozoic Fossil (NHM)."
