I think this is C. clatratus, not C. granulatus. There is a very good (and inexpensive) ID sheet on Carabus beetles available from:

C. clatratus is a Nationally Scarce species, described in John Walters' guide as "Found in bogs and by fresh water in Scotland - mainly on the coast" - I think your site qualifies?

I agree with kitenet on this - also much chunkier in overall appearance than granulatus.
