Found this strange looking guy on my garden path - never seen one before in my garden. Think it could be the larvae of the Vapourer Moth ? Are they quite common in the NE of England ?

You are correct but you need to add a revised ID with a Latin name to complete your identification. Having entered the common name just press "get recommended" for the Latin name. It should also be in the invertebrates section.
