Nice photos as usual Jeremy! As you probably know, hoverflies (and other insects) will spend quite a lot of time keeping themselves clean, and I suspect that in the first photo you've caught this insect combing dust and pollen from its eyes. They undergo some quite amazing contortions to allow their legs to reach the parts of the body they need to clean.

The way the abdomen has developed is very odd though.
