I'm sure you're right, but to be absolutely sure that this is not some sort of snake you need to observe its eyelids. If you see it blink - it's a lizard!
This sounds like a slow worm but I would prefer to see a photo to be sure. For more information on identifying slow worms refer the following ispot observation.
