Description:

There were a number of piles of dung, all containing stones. There were numerous sloes in the hedgerows.

I think you're right -

They certainly go for brambles when they're in reach, so why not sloes?

I'm sure they do...

...judging from the number and liquidity of their deposits, though, it looks like it's a diet that really goes through them.

Has to be treated with respect for that very reason!
