Description:

much larger than the small tortoiseshells around it - perhaps even larger than a red admiral and peacock - a coppery colour not patterned, but with veins showing and a hint of freckled spots. I have never seen one of these before and it went before I could get a good photo. The nearest in my book is a scarce copper. Any ideas?

Silver-washed Fritillary

Is my best guess - very late in the season for them but then they had a late start with the poor spring. Scarce Coppers are tiny in comparison to Red Admirals.
