Black-Headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus)
Description:

At first I thought this was a small Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) but the size and the dark colour of the beak has pushed me towards Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus).
Edit: Changed to match Ian's ID. Many thanks.

Explanation?

Hi Ophrys,

Can you explain what makes you sure that it is a Black-headed Gull rather than a Little Gull?

Thanks.

Ian

Yes, Little Gull is considerably smaller (20-30%), has shorter legs and is not so upright, with a shorter neck. In addition, it would have a smaller bill and the primary wing feathers would not show the same pattern as here, having less black, since it is a full grown bird. Little Gull is quite tern-like, in some ways. Little Gull is one of those where, when you see one, you will wonder why you ever confused it...they are quite distinctive and very small...but that all comes with experience of seeing them!

Many thanks, Ian

I've obviously put to much weight on the slightly smaller stature and the dark bill.
