This Pezizales fungi appeared in my garden today - this is the right colour too - no distortion from the camera. Long dimension is about 6cm. At the roots of a dying sweet chestnut in generalm broadleaved woodland on sandy soil.

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

I think more likely to be

I think more likely to be Orange Peel fungus Aleuria aurantia.
S.austriaca is more scalet than orange. Usually I find S. austriaca in winter growing on twigs in damp places.

The more I know the more I realise I don't know

I agree

Put the ID up and I'll agree, if I come back to this.
