Sexing the sparrowhawk

Now I've been caught out with these things before but aren't females more brown with males the slate gray?
Therefore is this not a male? although there isn't much rufous/orange evident..hmmm, just a thought.

No. Females can be this colour too.
Males colouration always more intense than this. Size alone should be good enough for ID. Those legs are pretty sturdy too, males are very skinny!

ok - agreed, I sometiems find size tricky in the isolation of a photo
